Fractional executive or full-time CMO?
Hire a full-time CMO when marketing is a daily operating system across multiple channels, when you have a team of three or more to lead, and when you can wait three to six months to find the right person.
Hire a fractional executive when you need senior judgment now, when the work is real but not yet 40 hours of CMO-level work, and when you would rather buy the next 12 months of growth than fund a search.
A useful test: if the founder is still approving every brief, every claim, and every retailer sell-in, the marketing work does not have an inside owner. Filling that with a junior hire usually makes the founder busier. A fractional executive can hold the plan and make the team — and any agency partners — faster.
Many of our clients start fractional and stay that way longer than they expected. The model scales down as well as up. Month-to-month. No 12-month contract to justify a seat that the business has outgrown — or not yet grown into.
